We had the opportunity to participate in the research and digitalization of the typographic revival project inspired by the work of the renowned Colombian artist Sergio Trujillo Magnenat. The 'typographic revival' is not just about replicating or scanning old forms; it also involves adapting and modernizing these forms to ensure they function in a contemporary context. Sergio Trujillo Magnenat, known for his prolific career as a visual artist in Colombia, left an artistic legacy that has endured through the decades. Born in Bogotá in 1911, his work ranged from illustrations and book covers to the creation of iconic logos and posters, such as those designed for the 'IX Centenary of the Bolivarian Games,' a sort of Latin American Olympic Games, held back in 1938.

On the other hand, the creation of this typeface was part of a research and recovery project of alphabets and typefaces made in Colombia in the early 20th century, led by the Instituto Caro y Cuervo, a prestigious institution dedicated to the study and preservation of Colombia’s cultural heritage. Many letters were reinterpreted from Trujillo’s other works, or in some cases, created entirely from scratch. This is achieved by analyzing the structure or skeleton of the original letters to understand the repeating modules that help maintain a graphic line or typographic system, even when adding new elements such as '@,' '&,' or any other character in the set. One of the updates for a more global context is the inclusion of letters and diacritics beyond Spanish, like the German double 's' 'ß,' or mathematical symbols like '%+>,' among others.

Tuvimos la oportunidad de participar en la investigación y digitalización del proyecto de rescate tipográfico inspirado en el trabajo del destacado artista colombiano Sergio Trujillo Magnenat. El “rescate tipográfico” o como lo dicen los gringos revival, no es simplemente una cuestión de replicar o escanear formas antiguas; implica también una adaptación y modernización de esas formas para asegurar que sean funcionales en el contexto contemporáneo. Sergio Trujillo Magnenat, conocido por su prolífica carrera como artista visual en Colombia, dejó un legado artístico que ha perdurado a través de las décadas. Nació en Bogotá en 1911, su trabajo incluyó desde ilustraciones y portadas de libros hasta la creación de logotipos y carteles emblemáticos, como los diseñados para el “IX Centenario de los Juegos Deportivos Bolivarianos", una especie de juegos Olímpicos latinoamericanos, esto por allá en 1938.

Por otro lado, la creación de esta tipografía formó parte de un proyecto de investigación y recuperación de abecedarios y tipografías realizadas en Colombia a principios del siglo XX liderada por el Instituto Caro y Cuervo, una prestigiosa institución dedicada al estudio y la preservación del patrimonio cultural colombiano. Muchas letras fueron reinterpretadas de otros ejercicios de Trujillo o en algunos casos completamente de cero. Esto se logra analizando cuál es la estructura o el esqueleto de las letras originales, con esto se entienden los módulos de repetición que nos ayudan a mantener una línea gráfica o sistema tipográfico, así sea un elemento nuevo cómo el “@“ el “&” o cualquier otro elemento dentro del set de caracteres. Una de estas actualizaciones para un contexto más global es la inclusión de letras y diacríticos más allá del español, cómo la doble “s” alemana “ß”, o signos matemáticos cómo los “%+>” entre otros.
